POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS

ACUTE HEALTH EFFECTS

SWALLOWED

Accidental ingestion of the material may be harmful; animal experiments indicate that ingestion of less than 150 gram may be fatal or may produce serious damage to the health of the individual. Benzimidazole carbamate anthelmintics, when administered in therapeutic doses, have produced allergic reaction (which may be associated with destruction of parasites), raised liver enzyme values, and may be associated with leukopenia and alopecia. Extremely large oral doses may produce intestinal cramps, anorexia, lethargy, pulmonary haemorrhage, oedema, hepatic and epicardial haemorrhage, and nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Other symptoms include dizziness, giddiness, tinnitus, insomnia, anxiety, confusion, convulsions, hallucinations and headache. Overdose may produce gastrointestinal symptoms, visual disturbance and psychic alterations. Absorption is generally limited. Animal studies suggest that this family of drugs may also be teratogenic. A metallic taste, nausea, vomiting and burning feeling in the upper stomach region occur after ingestion of copper and its derivatives. The vomitus is usually green/blue and discolors contaminated skin. Acute poisonings from ingestion are rare due to their prompt removal by vomiting. Should vomiting not occur, or is delayed systemic poisoning may occur producing kidney and liver damage, wide-spread capillary damage, and be fatal; death may occur after relapse from an apparent recovery. Anemia may occur in acute poisoning. Acute effects of selenium poisoning include nervousness, convulsions, drowsiness, frontal headaches, and in extreme cases, death from respiratory depression. There may also be skin eruptions, tiredness, stomach upset, discoloration of teeth, an odorous garlic breath and loss of hair and nails. Selenium is rapidly absorbed in the gut and accumulates in the liver and kidneys. Selenates and selenites cause damage to the kidney, heart, spleen, stomach and bowel. Selenites might increase the rate of miscarriage.

EYE

This material can cause eye irritation and damage in some persons.

SKIN

Skin contact is not thought to produce harmful health effects (as classified using animal models). Systemic harm, however, has been identified following exposure of animals by at least one other route and the material may still produce health damage following entry through wounds, lesions or abrasions. Good hygiene practice requires that exposure be kept to a minimum and that suitable gloves be used in an occupational setting. Entry into the blood-stream, through, for example, cuts, abrasions or lesions, may produce systemic injury with harmful effects. Examine the skin prior to the use of the material and ensure that any external damage is suitably protected.

INHALED

Not normally a hazard due to non-volatile nature of product. The material is not thought to produce either adverse health effects or irritation of the respiratory tract following inhalation (as classified using animal models). Nevertheless, adverse effects have been produced following exposure of animals by at least one other route and good hygiene practice requires that exposure be kept to a minimum and that suitable control measures be used in an occupational setting.

CHRONIC HEALTH EFFECTS

There is some evidence that human exposure to the material may result in developmental toxicity. This evidence is based on animal studies where effects have been observed in the absence of marked maternal toxicity, or at around the same dose levels as other toxic effects but which are not secondary non-specific consequences of the other toxic effects. Exposure to the material for prolonged periods may cause physical defects in the developing embryo (teratogenesis).
