May cause SENSITIZATION by skin contact.
Toxic by inhalation, in contact with skin and if swallowed.
Irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin.
Toxic: danger of very serious irreversible effects through inhalation, in
contact with skin and if swallowed.
Toxic effects may result from the accidental ingestion of the material; animal experiments indicate that ingestion of less than 40 gram may be fatal or may produce serious damage to the health of the individual. Considered an unlikely route of entry in commercial/industrial environments.
This material can cause eye irritation and damage in some persons. The material may produce moderate eye irritation leading to inflammation. Repeated or prolonged exposure to irritants may produce conjunctivitis.
Skin contact with the material may produce toxic effects; systemic effectsmay result following absorption. This material can cause inflammation of the skin oncontact in some persons. Toxic effects may result from skin absorption. Exposure limits with "skin" notation indicate that vapor and liquid may be absorbed through intact skin. Absorption by skin may readily exceed vapor inhalation exposure. Symptoms for skin absorption are the same as for inhalation. Contact with eyes and mucous membranes may also contribute to overall exposure and may also invalidate the exposure standard. The material may cause skin irritation after prolonged or repeated exposure and may produce on contact skin redness, swelling, the production of vesicles, scaling and thickening of the skin.
If inhaled, this material can irritate the throat andlungs of some persons. Inhalation of vapor is more likely at higher than normal temperatures.
Skin contact with the material is more likely to cause a sensitization reaction in some persons compared to the general population.
Principal routes of exposure are usually by inhalation of vapour and skin contact/absorption. Inhalation of vapour at any concentration may lead to severe poisoning similar to that encountered in instances of oral ingestion. Skin contact may cause smarting, reddening, sensitisation and dermatitis. Repeated absorption may result in heart, liver and kidney changes. Eye contact may cause lacrimation and burning sensation. Ingestion may result in headache, fatigue, nausea, visual impairment or complete blindness (may be permanent), high acidity of body fluids (acidosis) convulsions, circulatory collapse, respiratory failure and even death. Methanol is slowly eliminated from the body and should be regarded as a cumulative poison that cannot be made non-poisonous. WARNING : Formaldehyde has been classified by Worksafe as Category 2 - probable human carcinogen, by ACGIH as A2 - suspected human carcinogen and by IARC as Group 2A - probably carcinogenic to humans.
