Ingestion of large doses leads to the release of sulfur dioxide in the stomach which can cause gastric irritation, vomiting, colic, diarrhoea, and collapse. Estimated fatal dose of sodium sulfite is 10 grams. Swallowing the strongly alkaline solution will result in severe irritation and possible chemical burns to the mucous membranes and gastro-intestinal tract.
