Accidental ingestion of the material may be harmful; animal experiments indicate that ingestion of less than 150 gram may be fatal or may produce serious damage to the health of the individual. Considered an unlikely route of entry in commercial/industrial environments.
This material can cause eye irritation and damage in some persons. The material may produce severe irritation to the eye causing pronounced inflammation. Repeated or prolonged exposure to irritants may produce conjunctivitis.
Skin contact with the material may be harmful; systemic effects may resultfollowing absorption. This material can cause inflammation of the skin oncontact in some persons. The material may cause skin irritation after prolonged or repeated exposure and may produce on contact skin redness, swelling, the production of vesicles, scaling and thickening of the skin.
If inhaled, this material can irritate the throat andlungs of some persons. Although inhalation is not thought to produce harmful effects, the material may still produce health damage, especially where pre-existing organ (e.g. liver, kidney) damage is evident. Present definitions of harmful or toxic substances are generally confined to doses producing mortality (death) rather than those producing morbidity (disease, ill- health). Not normally a hazard due to non-volatile nature of product. Inhalation hazard is increased at higher temperatures. Inhalation of high concentrations of gas/vapor causes lung irritation with coughing and nausea, central nervous depression with headache and dizziness, slowing of reflexes, fatigue and inco-ordination.
There has been concern that this material can cause cancer or mutations, but there is not enough data to make an assessment.
Principal routes of exposure are by skin contact and inhalation of vapour. The liquid is a moderate irritant to the mucous membranes of the eyes and can cause inflammation of the eyelids and conjunctivitis. Skin contact can lead to burning sensations while prolonged contact may lead to defatting, irritation and dermatitis. The low volatility of isophorone means that high vapour concentrations are unlikely unless material is heated. However the low odour threshold level enhances nuisance value. Symptoms of exposure through inhalation include headache, dizziness, faintness, inebriation, feelings of suffocation, wheezing, shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting. Chronic exposure may cause liver and kidney damage.
