PRODUCT USE

Foaming agent, blowing agent used to produce low density foamed materials; particularly
plastics; PVC, Polyethylene. Incorporated at low temperatures and then heat processed to
produce foam. Some grades are " activated" ; i.e. contain additives to reduce blowing
temperature. Gas evolved in " blowing" may be flammable if concentrated. Blowing
Temperatures are: 190- 200 C Vinyfom AA- 120 AA- 110 AA110S 195- 200 C Vinyfom AA- 100L
AA- 100H 150- 155 C Vinyfom AA- 250H 155- 160 C Vinyfom AA- 250L 165- 170 C Vinyfom AA-

ACUTE HEALTH EFFECTS

SWALLOWED

  Although ingestion is not thought to produce harmful effects, the material may still be damaging to the health of the individual following ingestion, especially where pre-  existing organ (e.g. liver, kidney) damage is evident. Present definitions of harmful or toxic substances are generally based on doses producing mortality (death) rather than those producing morbidity (disease, ill-health). Gastrointestinal tract discomfort may produce nausea and vomiting. In an occupational setting however, ingestion of insignificant quantities is not thought to be cause for concern.  Considered an unlikely route of entry in commercial/industrial environments.  No acute or chronic human exposure data available.  The material may be.  discomforting.  and.  harmful.  if swallowed.  

EYE

  Although the material is not thought to be an irritant, direct contact with the eye may produce transient discomfort characterized by tearing or conjunctival redness (as with windburn).  The dust may produce eye discomfort causing smarting, pain and redness.  and is.  capable of causing a mild, temporary redness of the conjunctiva (similar to wind-burn), temporary impairment of vision and/ or other transient eye damage/ ulceration.  

SKIN

  The material is not thought to produce adverse health effects or skin irritation following contact (as classified using animal models). Nevertheless, good hygiene practice requires that exposure be kept to a minimum and that suitable gloves be used in an occupational setting.  The material may be.  discomforting.  to the skin.  if exposure is prolonged.  and may cause drying of the skin, which may lead to dermatitis.  Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause.  in some cases, sensitization.  Sensitization may result in allergic dermatitis responses includingrash, itching, hives or swelling of extremities.  The material may accentuate any pre-existing skin condition.  

INHALED

  The material is not thought to produce adverse health effects or irritation of the respiratory tract (as classified using animal models). Nevertheless, good hygiene practice requires that exposure be kept to a minimum and that suitable control measures be used in an occupational setting.  The material may be mildly discomforting.  to the upper respiratory tract.  and may cause.  in some cases, sensitization.  Inhalation of vapor may aggravate a pre-existing respiratory condition such as asthma, bronchitis, emphysema.  Respiratory sensitization may result in allergic/asthma like responses; from coughing and minor breathing difficulties to bronchitis with wheezing, gasping.  Acute effects from inhalation of high vapor concentrations may be chest and nasal irritation with coughing, sneezing, headache and even nausea.  The vapor from heated material is.  discomforting.  and may be.  harmful.  if inhaled.  and.  if exposure is prolonged.  

CHRONIC HEALTH EFFECTS

  Inhaling this product is more likely to cause a sensitization reaction in some persons compared to the general population.  
  Principal routes of exposure are usually by.  skin contact.  with the material.  inhalation of generated dust.  and.  inhalation of vapor from heated material.  Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause drying with cracking,irritation and possible dermatitis following.  Sensitization reactions may appear suddenly after repeatedsymptom free exposures.  Sensitization may give severe responses to very low levels of exposure, i.e. hypersensitivity. Sensitized persons should not be allowed to work in situations where exposure may occur.  Exposure to dust at 2-5 mg/m3 in manufacture of azodicarbonamide caused  sensitisation and asthma. Worker symptoms ceased on removal from exposure.  [Thorax 1981, vol 36, p 960-909]
