The material can produce severe chemical burns within the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract following ingestion. Considered an unlikely route of entry in commercial/industrial environments.
The material can produce severe chemical burns to the eye following direct contact. Vapors or mists may be extremely irritating. If applied to the eyes, this material causes severe eye damage. The material may be irritating to the eye, with prolonged contact causing inflammation. Repeated or prolonged exposure to irritants may produce conjunctivitis.
The material can produce severe chemical burns following direct contactwith the skin. The material may cause skin irritation after prolonged or repeated exposure and may produce on contact skin redness, swelling, the production of vesicles, scaling and thickening of the skin.
If inhaled, this material can irritate the throat andlungs of some persons. The material may produce respiratory tract irritation, and result in damage to the lung including reduced lung function.
Principal routes of exposure are usually by skin contact/eye contact and inhalation of vapor/spray mist. Excessive inhalation of vapours, mists or fumes may cause bronchial irritation, coughing, laboured breathing, nausea and pulmonary oedema. Additional effects have included circulatory collapse and confusion, delirium and coma. Cases of contact dermatitis have been reported with the use of sodium hypochlorite. Symptoms include severe itchness associated with skin lesions and mild eczema. Prolonged contamination of eyes can result in permanent injury. Cases of poisoning following ingestion of sodium hypochlorite have been reported. Symptoms include stomach pains, nausea, vomiting, hypoactivity, musclar weakness, emaciation, and in severe cases, death. Systemic effects include fall in blood pressure, delirium and coma.
