The material can produce chemical burns within the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract following ingestion. Ingestion may result in nausea, abdominal irritation, pain and vomiting. Considered an unlikely route of entry in commercial/industrial environments.
The material can produce chemical burns to the eye following direct contact. Vapors or mists may be extremely irritating. If applied to the eyes, this material causes severe eye damage. The liquid produces a high level of eye discomfort and is capable of causing pain and severe conjunctivitis. Corneal injury may develop, with possible permanent impairment of vision, if not promptly and adequately treated.
The material can produce chemical burns following direct contactwith the skin.
If inhaled, this material can irritate the throat andlungs of some persons. Overexposure is unlikely in this form.
There has been concern that this material can cause cancer or mutations, but there is not enough data to make an assessment. Skin contact with the material is more likely to cause a sensitization reaction in some persons compared to the general population.
Principal routes of exposure are usually by skin contact/eye contact. The product contains hydroquinone and tripotassium phosphate and can cause skin and eye irritation and allergic skin reaction. Ingestion of large doses may cause gastric irritation, colic and diarrhoea, as a result of liberation of sulphur dioxide. Ingestion of 1 gram of hydroquinone has caused nausea, headache, delirium and collapse. Contact dermatitis from hydroquinone has also been reported [NIOSHTIC]
