Chronic exposure may cause pulmonary oedema (lung damage), and silicosis, a disabling form of pneumoconiosis which leads to fibrosis (scarring of the air sacs in the lungs) and increases risk of tuberculosis. The dust is an allergen and may induce sensitisation and/or allergic reactions. It is a strong alkali and is corrosive to all body tissues. The wetted product may burn exposed skin.
