Replenishing strength solution used to adjust photographic developer. Operators should be
trained in procedures for safe use of this material. · Material is mixed and used in
accordance with manufacturers directions. A mildly alkaline buffered reducing solution
which may evolve sulfur dioxide upon reaction with strong acids.
"photographic chemical", "developer for RST System Film"
Irritating to eyes.
May cause SENSITIZATION by skin contact.
Limited evidence of a carcinogenic effect.
Possible risk of irreversible effects.
Toxic to aquatic organisms.
Although ingestion is not thought to produce harmful effects, the material may still be damaging to the health of the individual following ingestion, especially where pre- existing organ (e.g. liver, kidney) damage is evident. Present definitions of harmful or toxic substances are generally based on doses producing mortality (death) rather than those producing morbidity (disease, ill-health). Gastrointestinal tract discomfort may produce nausea and vomiting. In an occupational setting however, ingestion of insignificant quantities is not thought to be cause for concern. Considered an unlikely route of entry in commercial/industrial environments. Ingestion may result in nausea, abdominal irritation, pain and vomiting.
This material can cause eye irritation and damage in some persons.
The material is not thought to produce adverse health effects or skin irritation following contact (as classified using animal models). Nevertheless, good hygiene practice requires that exposure be kept to a minimum and that suitable gloves be used in an occupational setting. Irritation and skin reactions are possible with sensitive skin. Bare unprotected skin should not be exposed to this material. The material may accentuate any pre-existing dermatitis condition. Sensitization may result in allergic dermatitis responses includingrash, itching, hives or swelling of extremities.
The material is not thought to produce adverse health effects or irritation of the respiratory tract (as classified using animal models). Nevertheless, good hygiene practice requires that exposure be kept to a minimum and that suitable control measures be used in an occupational setting. Inhalation of vapor may aggravate a pre-existing respiratory condition such as asthma, bronchitis, emphysema.
There has been concern that this material can cause cancer or mutations, but there is not enough data to make an assessment. Skin contact with the material is more likely to cause a sensitization reaction in some persons compared to the general population.
Principal routes of exposure are usually by eye contact skin contact. Long term frequent exposure to hydroquinone vapour increases the risk of lung oedema. Diethylene glycol absorption, if frequent and long term, may cause damage to the nervous system, liver and kidneys.
