Na2S2O4, "Na2S2O4. 2H2O", H2O4S2.2Na, "sodium dithionite", "sodium hydrosulphite",
"sodium hydrosulfite", "sodium sulfoxylate", "dithionous acid, disodium salt"
Spontaneously flammable in air.
Harmful if swallowed.
Contact with water liberates toxic gas.
Contact with acids liberates toxic gas.
Irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin.
May cause fire.
Accidental ingestion of the material may be harmful; animal experiments indicate that ingestion of less than 150 gram may be fatal or may produce serious damage to the health of the individual. Considered an unlikely route of entry in commercial/industrial environments. Considered an unlikely route of entry in commercial/industrial environments.
This material can cause eye irritation and damage in some persons.
This material can cause inflammation of the skin oncontact in some persons. Skin contact is not thought to have harmful health effects, however the material may still produce health damage following entry through wounds, lesions or abrasions. The material may accentuate any pre-existing skin condition. Solution of material in moisture on the skin, or perspiration, may markedly increase skin corrosion and accelerate tissue destruction. Bare unprotected skin should not be exposed to this material.
If inhaled, this material can irritate the throat andlungs of some persons. Although inhalation is not thought to produce harmful effects, the material may still produce health damage, especially where pre-existing organ (e.g. liver, kidney) damage is evident. Present definitions of harmful or toxic substances are generally confined to doses producing mortality (death) rather than those producing morbidity (disease, ill- health). Respiratory sensitization may result in allergic/asthma like responses; from coughing and minor breathing difficulties to bronchitis with wheezing, gasping. Inhalation of vapor may aggravate a pre-existing respiratory condition.
There is some evidence that inhaling this product is more likely to cause a sensitization reaction in some persons compared to the general population.
Principal routes of exposure are usually by inhalation of generated dust and skin contact with the material. Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause drying with cracking, irritation and possible dermatitis following.
