Toxic effects may result from the accidental ingestion of the material; animal experiments indicate that ingestion of less than 40 gram may be fatal or may produce serious damage to the health of the individual. The material can produce chemical burns within the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract following ingestion. The liquid is. highly. discomforting. to the gastrointestinal tract. and. toxic. if swallowed. Considered an unlikely route of entry in commercial/industrial environments.
The material can produce chemical burns to the eye following direct contact. Vapors or mists may be extremely irritating. If applied to the eyes, this material causes severe eye damage. The vapor/liquid is. extremely. discomforting. to the eyes. The material may be irritating to the eye, with prolonged contact causing inflammation. Repeated or prolonged exposure to irritants may produce conjunctivitis.
The material can produce chemical burns following direct contactwith the skin. The liquid is. discomforting. to the skin. and is. capable of causing. allergic skin reactions. which may lead to dermatitis. Toxic effects may result from skin absorption. The material may cause skin irritation after prolonged or repeated exposure and may produce on contact skin redness, swelling, the production of vesicles, scaling and thickening of the skin.
If inhaled, this material can irritate the throat andlungs of some persons. The vapor is. highly. discomforting. to the upper respiratory tract. The material may produce respiratory tract irritation, and result in damage to the lung including reduced lung function.
Skin contact with the material is more likely to cause a sensitization reaction in some persons compared to the general population.
Principal routes of exposure are usually by skin contact/absorption and inhalation of sulphur dioxide gas. An in vitro skin absorption study using rat skin has suggested that aqueous solutions of CD4 penetrate the skin. [Kodak] Workers developed allergic contact dermatitis from the colour developer CD4 and a cross-allergy between other chemically related developers. [CISDOC] Sulphur dioxide gas may be liberated from the concentrate and may cause irritation to the nose, throat and eyes. Ingestion may cause kidney damage based on animal data. [Kodak]
