Boards for construction of furniture and cabinets and/ or panelling. When sawing or
drilling, use machines that have efficient dust containment or machines that generate
coarse dust.
"melamine wood chip board particle board"
May cause SENSITIZATION by skin contact.
Limited evidence of a carcinogenic effect.
Although ingestion is not thought to produce harmful effects, the material may still be damaging to the health of the individual following ingestion, especially where pre- existing organ (e.g. liver, kidney) damage is evident. Present definitions of harmful or toxic substances are generally based on doses producing mortality (death) rather than those producing morbidity (disease, ill-health). Gastrointestinal tract discomfort may produce nausea and vomiting. In an occupational setting however, ingestion of insignificant quantities is not thought to be cause for concern. Overexposure is unlikely in this form. Considered an unlikely route of entry in commercial/industrial environments. Ingestion may result in nausea, abdominal irritation, pain and vomiting.
Although the material is not thought to be an irritant, direct contact with the eye may produce transient discomfort characterized by tearing or conjunctival redness (as with windburn).
The material is not thought to produce adverse health effects or skin irritation following contact (as classified using animal models). Nevertheless, good hygiene practice requires that exposure be kept to a minimum and that suitable gloves be used in an occupational setting. Irritation and skin reactions are possible with sensitive skin. The material may accentuate any pre-existing dermatitis condition.
The material is not thought to produce adverse health effects or irritation of the respiratory tract (as classified using animal models). Nevertheless, good hygiene practice requires that exposure be kept to a minimum and that suitable control measures be used in an occupational setting. Not normally a hazard due to non-volatile nature of product. Inhalation of dust may aggravate a pre-existing respiratory condition such as asthma, bronchitis, emphysema.
There has been concern that this material can cause cancer or mutations, but there is not enough data to make an assessment. Skin contact with the material is more likely to cause a sensitization reaction in some persons compared to the general population.
· Hazard relates to dust released by sawing, cutting, sanding, trimming or other finishing operations. Principal routes of exposure are usually by inhalation of generated dust and inhalation of vapor from heated material. As with any chemical product, contact with unprotected bare skin; inhalation of vapor, mist or dust in work place atmosphere; or ingestion in any form, should be avoided by observing good occupational work practice. New material when heated emits 16 mg of formaldehyde per 100 g of board. This is irritating to the mucous membranes of the nose, throat, respiratory tract. In severe exposure, headache and nausea may be experienced. Use strict occupational hygiene practices to minimize all personal contact.
