A very rapid drying paint that is usually applied by spray atomisation to roadways,
airport runways for traffic marking. The use of a quantity of material in an unventilated
or confined space may result in increased exposure and an irritating atmosphere
developing. Before starting consider control of exposure by mechanical ventilation.
Spraying of road markings is normal in completely open atmospheres however the potential
for operator exposure may be high considering the large volumes of material atomized, the
position of operator following a leading boom and the continuous nature of the operation
in highway marking. Particular attention should be given to spraying in basement car parks
or other enclosed areas. If inhalation risk exists, wear SAA approved organic- vapor
respirator. In conditions where worker exposure is very high, wear full face air supplied
breathing apparatus. Provide adequate ventilation in warehouse or closed storage areas.
"Pavement Line Marking Paint road marking lacquer"
Danger of cumulative effects.
Limited evidence of a carcinogenic effect.
May cause harm to the unborn child.
Possible risk of impaired fertility.
HARMFUL - May cause lung damage if swallowed.
Harmful: danger of serious damage to health by prolonged exposure through
inhalation.
Harmful by inhalation and if swallowed.
Irritating to eyes and skin.
Highly flammable.
Vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation.
Dangerous for the ozone layer.
Toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause long- term adverse effects in the aquatic
environment.
Accidental ingestion of the material may be harmful; animal experiments indicate that ingestion of less than 150 gram may be fatal or may produce serious damage to the health of the individual. Not a likely route of entry into the body in commercial or industrial environments. The liquid may produce considerable gastrointestinal discomfort and be harmful or toxic if swallowed. Ingestion may cause nausea, pain and vomiting. Vomit entering the lungs by aspiration can cause inflammation of the lungs, which can lead to death.
This material can cause eye irritation and damage in some persons. The material may produce severe irritation to the eye causing pronounced inflammation. Repeated or prolonged exposure to irritants may produce conjunctivitis.
This material can cause inflammation of the skin oncontact in some persons. Skin contact is not thought to have harmful health effects, however the material may still produce health damage following entry through wounds, lesions or abrasions. Toxic effects may result from skin absorption. Open cuts, abraded or irritated skin should not be exposed to this material. The material may accentuate any pre-existing dermatitis condition. The material may cause skin irritation after prolonged or repeated exposure and may produce on contact skin redness, swelling, the production of vesicles, scaling and thickening of the skin.
The material is not thought to produce respiratory irritation (as classified using animal models). Nevertheless inhalation of the material, especially for prolonged periods, may produce respiratory discomfort and occasionally, distress. Inhalation hazard is increased at higher temperatures. Inhalation of high concentrations of gas/vapor causes lung irritation with coughing and nausea, central nervous depression with headache and dizziness, slowing of reflexes, fatigue and inco-ordination. If exposure to highly concentrated solvent atmosphere is prolonged this may lead to narcosis, unconsciousness, even coma and possible death.
There has been concern that this material can cause cancer or mutations, but there is not enough data to make an assessment. Ample evidence exists that developmental disorders are directlycaused by human exposure to the material.
Principal routes of exposure are usually by. inhalation of vapor/spray mist and skin contact with the material. Prolonged or continuous skin contact with the liquid may cause defatting with drying, cracking, irritation and dermatitis following. Chronic solvent inhalation exposures may result in nervous system impairment and liver and blood changes. [PATTYS]. Lead can cross the placenta, and cause miscarriage, stillbirths and birth defects. Exposure before birth can cause mental retardation, behavioral disorders and infant death. Lead can also cause reduced sex drive, impotence, sterility and damage the sperm of males, increasing the potential for birth defects. Periods in women can also be affected.
